The Effects The Media Has On American Society Term Paper
The Effects The Media Has On American Society - Term Paper Example Media is considered to be a critical tool of communication between the government and the public, a fact which is reflected in the use of the media every time an important governmental plans needs to be promoted. The effects of media on American society are critically discussed in this paper. It is noted that the relationship between the media and the particular society is of similar form as in other countries worldwide ââ¬â referring to the relationship between the media and the local population. However, in USA this relationship is highly developed; the media is considered as the unique tool for identifying the consent of the public to particular political decisions. It should be noted that through the decades the power of the media to affect the American society seems to be weakened ââ¬â probably under the influence of the failures of media to represent the actual status/ quality of political and economic plans as promoted by the government, the local authorities but also the private sector ââ¬â the case of Enron which was considered to be a quite powerful corporation, as presented through the media, is an indicative example of the failure of media to check the validity of the social and economic messages promoted through the particular means of communication. Traditionally, the American society has been strongly affected by media. As a result, every time that a critical political decision had to be supported the media was used, more or less, to ensure the consent of the public to the attempted changes. In order to understand the effects of media on American Society, it would be necessary to refer primarily to the characteristics of this society. Then, the potentials of media to affect the particular society would be made clear. The American society is based on specific principles/ ethics. Trust is of key importance for getting the approval of the public. In terms of decisions related to the management of the countryââ¬â¢s issues, the particip ation of the public has been of critical importance. The term participation refers to the awareness of the public of the basic rules of the attempted plans, i.e. the direct involvement of the public in the realization of these plans is not necessary. In other words, in the context of the trust, as existing between the politicians and the public the provision of information to the public on the main principles/ parts of governmental decisions is considered as having the sense of involvement of the public in the relevant initiatives. The power of the media to influence the view of the public on critical social, political and economic issues is reflected in the literature published in the particular field. At a first level, the ability of the media to influence each individual has been assessed. The theories developed in this area have been rather contradictory. In the study of Shirley (256) reference is made to the hypodermic needle theory, which is based on the view that media cannot affect equally all people; rather, the media affects each individual at a different level in accordance with his background and perceptions. In the context of this theory it is believed that the behavior of the individual is of critical importance in order to understand his exposure to the media, meaning the level at which the media can influence the views/ decisions of the particular person. On the other hand, there is the magic bullet theory, which considers the potentials of the media to influence the public as being of a standardized form. In the context of this theory, the media is able to influence all people the same even if the message transmitted through the media has not been checked as of its validity (Shirley 256). The above theory

The most appropriate strategy for the segmented UK market Essay
The most appropriate strategy for the segmented UK market - Essay Example 112). This is the initial tip in attaining a feasible market for these products. The company should, first of all, deal with feasible products for introduction into the market. In this sense, it better to deal with t-shirts and simple top clothes. Additionally, it should concern with jeans clothes and jackets. A modern addition to the same pertains to khaki products. This is because they possess perpetuity in fashion world. In this sense, the products face a high certainty of sales. In terms of style and design, it is essential that the company separates its clothes products in terms of functionality and appearance. However, the functionality will rely on appearance and psychology games as pertains to the customers. For example, there could be light denim for hot weather. On the other hand, heavily designed denim would be for cold weather. In another sense, there could be workman oriented clothes or street articulated clothes. Additionally, there could be quality differences in terms of costs. In terms of denim products, fine clothes would represent better quality. However, this should occur within a range of fineness that remains fashionable for the young age. This means that the company should not compromise on the quality because the same would necessitate a divergent range of prices. In close relation to the same the company should entail various sizes to clothes. ... However, a market study should entail average prices for both female and male markets. For instance, there is a recent preference for fitting clothes among the male markets. This means that should all cloths should strive towards average definition of size. In terms of prices, there are few factors to consider in the same. To begin with, there should be range of prices that customers should be aware. In this sense, the fashion line creates a sense of quality and affordability of the same. Market segments are divisible into two vital aspects. For instance, the marketing team should consider the lower income sections. In addition to the same, the marketing team should consider the higher income groups. This is achievable in terms of placement and distribution. In higher income neighborhoods, they should set higher prices. That is because such a group considers high quality which is to coincide with prices. Low prices might connote poor quality of clothes. However, there is a highly fas hion conscious group among the high income earners. This group would be slightly price sensitive thereby the prices should be reasonable in order that the fashion line does not lose the group. In terms of low income neighborhoods, the stores should have slightly higher prices than the average consumer prices in such areas. This should be higher by only 20 percent. This is because such consumers would perceive such clothes as of better quality than their daily products. In terms of promotion, there would be notable aspects to the same. To begin with, the clothes market is a wide one that needs marketing techniques that reach an extensive audience. The immediate audience for such products would pertain to the UK consumers. It is crucial to note that the marketing

Role Of Safeguards In Strengthening Independence Essay
Role Of Safeguards In Strengthening Independence - Essay Example The importance of autonomy of auditors and the inherent risk of not being totally self-determining raises many of the issues where safeguards were suggested in order to minimize the threat to the sovereignty of the auditors. Although auditors cannot be completely liberated from the client, however, there are certain measures, which brings the dependency of the auditors to an acceptable level. Independence of the auditors is compulsory in order to assure that the opinion that the auditor provide is free from biases. Auditors provide reasonable assurance upon the financial statements of the company where the auditor expresses the opinion whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement and all applicable standards were followed (Cai, 1997). The assurance regarding the independence of auditors must be affirmed, though not completely but to an acceptable level (Silvia, 2010), by providing safeguards upon the issues that threaten the auditorsââ¬â¢ independence. ... The safeguards provided in order to minimize the threat to the independence of the auditors are categorized differently. The safeguards provided ensure that the threats to the independence of auditors are minimized to the acceptable level. Absolute Prohibition The independence of the auditors is strengthened when there is complete prohibition is provided regarding the financial and non-financial interest of the auditor to the client. When the auditor is completely prohibited from possessing any type of interest in the client the independence increases (Peter, 2004). The framework completely restricts the client and auditor to possess any type of relationship whether business or personal. The restriction is imposed upon activities that are to be carried out between the client and the auditor. Permitting But Restricting the Extent In several cases the framework permits the auditor to continue with the activity with the client but the extent of the activity and relationship with the cli ent is limited.

Compare the structure and activities of a public sector or not for Assignment
Compare the structure and activities of a public sector or not for profit organisation with a similar organisation in the privat - Assignment Example INTRODUCTION Private sector and public sector organizations differ in the way they are managed and operated. The way they are structured helps to facilitate goal achievement. This report compares the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) with Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac). Reserve Bank of Australia RBA is Australiaââ¬â¢s central bank. The objectives of the Bank are set out in its policies ââ¬â ensuring that the monetary and banking policies are advantageous to the people of Australia (Reserve Bank of Australia 3). In so doing the policies of the bank are designed to ensure stability of Australiaââ¬â¢s currency, facilitate full employment; and contribute to economic prosperity and welfare of the Australian people. RBA has a Governor and Deputy Governor as well as a number of boards, committees, groups and departments. They all have their relevant functions which facilitate the proper management of the Bank. The structure of the organization is shown in the organization cha rt in Appendix 1. The Boards include the Reserve Bank Board and the Payments System Board. The Reserve Bank Board has responsibility for monetary and banking related polices while the Payments Systems Board is responsible for polices relating to the payments system. The Governor is the Chairman for both Boards with the Deputy Governor as Deputy Chairman for the Reserve Bank Board. The committees of RBA include the Executive Committee; the Audit Committee; the Remuneration Committee; and the Risk Management Committee. The forum for discussions among heads of functional departments and the Governor and Deputy Governor is provided by the executive committee. The audit committee is chaired by a non-executive board and this should help facilitate the level of independence that is required of members of this committee. The Remuneration Committee is also a committee of the Reserve Bank Board and is drawn from the non-executive members of that Board. The Risk Management Committee is chaired by the Deputy Governor and its responsibility is that of identifying and managing those risks that are not policy related, across the bank. The Groups consists of the Banking and Payments Group; the Corporate Services; the Currency; the Economic; the Financial Markets; and the Financial System Groups. All of these groups have one or more departments that fall under their remit. They provide a range of services for institution. The Banking and Payments Group consists of two departments ââ¬â the Banking Department and the Payments Settlements Department. The function of the Banking Department includes the provision of a special range of banking and registry services to the departments of the Australian Government, overseas central banks and official institutions. The Payments and Settlements Department on the other hand has the responsibility of settling high valued payments and inter-bank obligations which result ââ¬Ëfrom the conduct of Exchange Settlement Accounts andââ¬â ¢ the RBAââ¬â¢s own trading activities. Other responsibilities of the Bank and Settlement Department include the operations of the Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System (RITS) which is Australiaââ¬â¢s real time gross settlement (RTGS) system. RBAââ¬â¢s Corporate Services Group consists of the Facilities Management Department; the Financial Administration Department; and the Systems and Technology Department (Reserve Bank of

History 1920s Essay Example for Free
History 1920s Essay America went through many social changes with the American Revolution and industrial revolution. During the 1920ââ¬â¢s, the face of America began to change more into an urban society. Many differences between the rural and urban sides of America emerged. Historians consider the tensions of the 1920s as a backlash against the rising urban America, which turns out true. Rural people believed that the city lacked morals. The urban city dwellers lashed back saying that rural residents did not understand the technology of modern times. In the 1920s, for the first time in American history, more people lived in cities rather than the countryside. People living in the more rural parts of America saw the urban lifestyle as a threat to traditionally shared value. The cities, a haven for political corruption and distraction, had much more alcohol and prostitution problems than their countryside counterparts did. With the rise of Hollywood and films, people found an escape from their routine life and went to see movies that portrayed what it really meant to live the American dream. However, the rural side of the country stuck to the old ways of agriculture life as the struggle between old and new still went on. With the rise in media also came an increase of cultural battles. The media brought about a revolution of morals since many urban Americas saw the changes in media and lifestyle as liberation from the old countryside Victorian past. Granted, the rural Americans did not see it this way. They felt that American had begun to change in sinful ways and that the ethicality of America had begun to decay. Many people in the countryside also resented the amount of immigrants coming into America. As a result, the Klu Klux Klan revived and revolted against the immigrants, Blacks, Catholics, Jews, and any modern or progressive movement. Located mostly in the rural parts of America, the Klu Klux Klan greatly showed their discontent with the modern American lifestyle. The South showed their animosity towards the foreigners and Blacks through discrimination and racism. However, none of this stopped the urban rise of America that the country would soon have to accept.

How WW Jacobs Creates a Sense of Horror in The Monkeyââ¬â¢s Paw Essays
Jacobs creates a sense of horror in ââ¬ËThe Monkeyââ¬â¢s Pawââ¬â¢ by using a variety of literary techniques. As ââ¬ËThe Monkey's Pawââ¬â¢ was written in 1902, Jacobs makes the story scary in ways that are very different to modern horror films and books. We can tell that the story was written in the early twentieth century as it contains many details that would have been common in Victorian literature. One of the most obvious features from ââ¬ËThe Monkeyââ¬â¢s Pawââ¬â¢ that tells us that the story was written over a century ago, is the old-fashioned language that Jacobs uses. The language used throughout the story contains words such as ââ¬Ërubicundââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëvisageââ¬â¢, which are not words that are commonly used today. Also, the fact that à £200 was considered to be a lot of money shows that the story was from a long time ago as à £200 is not seen as a large amount of money in the modern world. Other aspects of the story also show that ââ¬Ë The Monkeyââ¬â¢s Pawââ¬â¢ was written in the Victorian time period - the fact that India was seen as a new, exotic and unexplored country tells us that the story must have been written in a time when transport wasnââ¬â¢t as easily available as it is today. In the story, when the Sergeant-Major tells the Whites about his exploration, they seem almost in awe of him as he is seen to be the bravest and most adventurous person that they have ever met because of his journey to India. The fact that Jacobs used a Sergeant-Major character is also another typical feature of Victorian literature. Finally, the household objects that the Whites use in ââ¬ËThe Monkeyââ¬â¢s Pawââ¬â¢ show that the story was not set in modern times. For example, the Whites use candles for light and heat their kettle on a fire as there was no electricity in Victorian times. As ââ¬ËThe Monkeyââ¬â¢s Paw... ...f seeing whether their wish has come true. I think that WW Jacobs is a very powerful and intelligent writer who has cleverly used every possible feature in the story of ââ¬ËThe Monkeyââ¬â¢s Pawââ¬â¢ to create a sense of horror. The literary techniques that he uses are very typical to those of most short stories written in Victorian times. Personally, I think that these techniques, such as the mystery of the unknown, are a great deal scarier and build up a much better sense of tension than present day horror stories. Modern horror films and books mainly use gore, wounds and blood to create the element of disgust that generates the most profit. However, I think that Jacobs cleverly uses subtle details and suggestion in ââ¬ËThe Monkeyââ¬â¢s Pawââ¬â¢ to develop a sense of terror throughout the story, and this is what creates a classic horror story that really plays with the readerââ¬â¢s mind.

Counseling Case Study
It is imperative for every school counselor to consider the diversity present in a multicultural setting of the students before the school counselors engage in their practice. In this paper, the focus would be on answering the series of questions regarding the presentation of an ideal, therapeutic, and ethical counseling session between therapist and client relationship: First, ââ¬Å"who is the person to be consulted prior the presentation of such kind of therapeutic session?Second, What would people learn from the implementation of the cultural ethnic theories which would be beneficial for the multicultural societies in U. S.? Third, what are the cultural factors that need to be taken into consideration in working or counseling with Hispanic families? ; and lastly, What are the suggestions and recommendations at hand for the school counselors in dealing with both the teachers and the families of students in the U. S.? (Corey, 2001, p. 50). Body Who is the person to consult for the presentation prior to such kind of therapeutic session? Foremost, the person who is to be consulted prior the presentation of a strategic therapeutic relationship is the client to gain from the session. The client or student should be debriefed by the school counselor in order to discuss desired goals for the therapy and counseling. Moreover, it is also required for a counselor to understand the relationship of the client in family, and in the multicultural setting where the individual belongs; it is to determine the characteristics of the culture and subcultures present, and how it plays a factor in developing the people and the institutions under it (Sue, Ivey, Pedersen, 1996).What would people learn from the implementation of the cultural ethnic theories? Clients in the counseling process would benefit from the implemented cultural ethnic theories. Internalization of such desired and acquired behaviors from the therapeutic process would be the goal of every counselor for their cli ents. Furthermore, the school counselors should be able to develop effective techniques on how to gain and acquire behaviors and attitudes that are similar to the desired behaviors of a specific culture (Sue & Sue, 1999; Pedersen, 2000).What are the cultural factors that are necessary in working with Hispanic families? Cultural factors have to be considered in working with Hispanic families. Some of these cultural factors in the Hispanic family include the following: their ways of verbal and non-verbal communication, generalized beliefs of the Hispanic culture, family systems, political, educational, and social principles which serve as institutions and foundations that influence the intrinsic values of individuals in the Hispanic family. The challenge of being ââ¬Å"multiculturalâ⬠is posed to the counselors in order for them to gain the trust and increase their rapport in their client in the counseling process (Freedman, 1999). What are the recommendations at hand for the sch ool counselors in dealing with both the teachers and the families of students in the U. S.? To sum it all up, school counselors must be flexible and increase oneââ¬â¢s insight to consider cultural diversities, ethnicity, language and race in the family and educational setting of Hispanic students residing in U. S (Clemente & Collison, 2000).Moreover, this calls for recommendation that there should be provision of more intensive training for school counselors to increase their awareness and avoid their own issues of stereotypes among clients who are culturally different from them. Furthermore, the case of the twin Hispanic boys maltreated by the Mexican should be put into account for the counselors to research more about their clientââ¬â¢s cultural background so they may be careful in treating their clients to avoid misunderstanding and increase the tendency for an effective counseling process(ASCA, 2006). Counseling Case Study This paper is all about the discussion of prevalent child abuse occurring within the family. According to district counselors, the incident of frequent abuse among the children should be stopped by providing education and counseling session on corporal punishment and child abuse among the Hispanic and non-Hispanic parents in American societies. This paper then, focuses on the provision of proper education among the Hispanic families where corporal punishment and child abuse is increasingly rampant. The foci stresses on the things that the families have to learn regarding the avoidance of abuse and imparts some cultural factors and recommendations that has to be taken into consideration when dealing with Hispanic families. The aforementioned objectives of this paper were expected to be met by the district school counselors in every community. Counseling Case Study Introduction Corporal punishment and frequent spanking among children (which is commonly perceived to lead into child abuse ) is becoming increasingly rampant in Hispanic and non-Hispanic families. For the parents especially the Hispanic parents, who wish to discipline their children, resort to such sudden negative reinforcement in order to discipline their children. However, district counselors believe that frequent spanking which is a form of corporal punishment found that it does not lead to a favorable result among children in the long run. In so doing, the counselors investigated on the matter and they came up with devising other effective ways of disciplining children and counseling the parents as an alternate solution other than the negative punishment.Body I. Child Abuse within the Family A. Consultation prior the presentation of a need to alleviate child abuse In order for me to determine whether a case of child abuse occurred in a certain family, I need to consult fellow counselors or psychology colleagues to ask for their second opinion. There has to be a consensus and a social norm that has to followed regarding the decision whether child abuse has occurred or just mere corporal punishment.Practically speaking, corporal punishment occurs only when there is no ââ¬Å"severe and intense punishmentâ⬠was executed due to present emotional state of the parent which may be out of anger. B. Things to be learned regarding corporal punishment and child abuse Corporal punishment may be in the form of symbolic gestures of slapping or knuckling in the head (Graciano, 1994). Whereas, child abuse is explicitly the mark of left (physical, psychological, and emotional) damage in the children who received the severe and intense negative punishment from the parent/s.Occasional spanking and its frequency was found by many counselors to lead into the increase of frequency and intensity of the habit. This results to the unawareness of the parents that they are actually executing child abuse among their child or children. C. Cultural factors to put into account when working with Hispanic families Cultural factors needs to be taken into consideration when working with Hispanic families. As they are known to prioritize familism, they are more likely to induce harm to impose discipline among their children. Moreover, Hispanic families are found to be more likely to abuse their children due to the repressive state they are currently experiencing from anxiety in coping and adjusting within their culturally diverse society. II. Recommendations and Suggestions I would like to recommend to the school counselors that how to work with both teachers and families is to associate household like that of a manager leading his subordinates at work. Similarly, leaders, as counterparts of parents, should not practice negative reinforcement among their employees. Most likely, leaders are expected to promote positive attitude among their subordinates to increase the employeesââ¬â¢ likelihood to perform their best at work. Same with the family, parents should positively reinforce the positive behavior of their children rather than negatively punishing them to decrease the tendency negative behavior among their children in the future (Holtzman et. al. ) References Graciano, (Initials).
